Dr. Richard Gold is a James McGill Professor at McGill University’s Faculty of Law where he was the founding Director of the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy. He teaches in the area of comparative intellectual property and innovation. His research centers on the nexus between innovation, development and commerce, with an emphasis on the life sciences. Professor Gold has provided advice to Health Canada, Industry Canada, the Canadian Biotechnology Advisory Committee, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (where he was the lead author of the OECD Guidelines on the Licensing of Genetic Inventions and a report on Collaborative Mechanisms in Life Science Intellectual Property), the World Health Organization, the World Intellectual Property Organization and UNITAID. His research has been published in high-impact journals in science, law, philosophy and international relations including Nature Biotechnology, The Lancet, PLoS Medicine, International Affairs Quarterly, the European Journal of International Relations, the McGill Law Journal, and Public Affairs Quarterly.

Sarah Ali-Khan, PhD

Sarah Ali-Khan is a Research Associate in the Faculty of Law, and Project Manager for the McGill PACEOMICS teams. Her research interests focus at the intersection of genomics, socio-ethical issues (GE3LS), innovation and policy. Current projects explore intellectual property management in Personalized Medicine, including the implications of gene patenting on patient access to genetic testing in Canada. She is also leading knowledge translation for PACEOMICS. Previously, Sarah was at the Centre of Genomics and Policy at McGill University and was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Sandra Rotman Centre, University of Toronto. There she focused on GE3LS issues in the clinical translation of whole genome analysis and the relationship between genetic diversity and ethnicity under the aegis of innovation and global health. She organized international workshops on ‘Ancestry in Health and Medicine’ and ‘Genomics and the Bioeconomy’, and was the 2010 winner of the ‘SIG’ Society Impact of Genomics prize from the Ontario Genomics Institute. Sarah has a PhD in Pharmacology and Therapeutics from McGill (fetal-maternal issues, morpho-genetic pathways in embryonic development) and a BSc from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand.

David is a second year law student at McGill, with a BA from the University of Winnipeg and an MA from McGill, both in mathematics. David teaches math and stats at the college level in Montreal. His research interests include IP, geometric group theory and aboriginal law.
Nicholas Torti, BA

Nicholas is a second-year law student at McGill University where he serves as senior editor of the McGill Journal of Law and Health and as associate editor of the McGill Law Journal. Prior to attending law school, Nicholas completed a BA in French-English translation and a university certificate in technical and professional writing. He has experience translating within the biomedical and pharmaceutical industries and in rendering complex material accessible to non-expert readers.
Max Jarvie, MPhil, PhD

Max Jarvie holds graduate degrees in philosophy from the London School of Economics and McGill University, with concentrations in scientific method and epistemology. After completing his studies, Max established a career in information technology management, spending several years as a departmental IT director and later taking on the role of project manager in broadcast engineering. He is presently pursuing a joint BCL/LLB degree at McGill’s Faculty of Law, where he is an editor at the McGill Law Journal and a student law clerk at the Quebec Court of Appeal.

James Duffy is currently a third-year McGill law student and Research Assistant. He completed the BSc Honours Chemistry program at McGill in 2011. On graduating from McGill law in December 2014, James hopes to work in the intellectual property law realm, specifically with regards to patents.
Claudette Van Zyl, BA

Claudette is a second-year law student at McGill University, where she also completed her undergraduate degree in Political Science and Economics as a Greville Smith Scholar. Since the fall of 2012, Claudette has worked as a research assistant at McGill’s Centre for Intellectual Property Policy and as a legal researcher for the International Development Law Organization. Her recent projects include drafting a report on the legal infrastructure of Fair Trade in developing countries, editing an upcoming book publication on sustainable development principles in the decisions of international tribunals, coding data for an intellectual property law database, and proofreading an amici curiae brief submitted to the Supreme Court of the United States for Association for Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics.
Clarissa Allen, BSc/BA, MA

Clarissa is currently a third-year student at the Faculty of Law, and a Fellow of the McGill Health Equity Research Consortium. She has a Masters in Biomedical Ethics, also from McGill University, and a dual undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Human Genetics from the University of Guelph. Her research interests focus on how current patenting practices impact access to medicines and health equity. She has worked as a summer research student at Gilbert’s LLP, where she researched and wrote a gene patent landscape opinion, and as an Academic Associate at the Centre for Genomics and Policy, where she researched ethical, legal, and social issues related to new biotechnologies.

Paul Holden is a third-year law student at McGill. He previously studied computer science and worked as a software developer in the network security industry for eight years. His interests in law include anything related to technology and the internet, as well as criminal law and public international law.
